Nina Nielsen became involved in her profession because she truly enjoys teaching, and was delighted by this opportunity to work with disadvantaged youth. She started working for Horsens Ungdomsskole 11 years ago. The school is for “troubled” teens, and teens facing family hardship, suicide, day-to-day struggles. The school helps the students to find their purpose in life, to learn to overcome obstacles, and to set and meet their goals. The school’s goal is to help these youngsters succeed.
Ms. Nielsen believes that young people need to see a road with both opportunities and direction in order to assist them in moving into meaningful training and subsequent work. An expert problem-solver, she is responsible for supporting the teachers working with the school’s students, learning new ways to encourage students to participate in education, and assisting students in acquiring personal and social skills.
Ms. Nielsen is looking to reform education to make more room to break up the traditional ways of running a school, so that children and young people can get a school that meets both their individual needs and the needs of society for labor. She attributes her success to her desire to help unfortunate youths to succeed, learn to overcome obstacles and meet their goals.
